Tobermory Distillery Goes Caribbean

24/01/2003

Burn Stewart Distillers PLC., owners of Tobermory Distillery, has been acquired by Angostura Ltd., a subsidiary of C L Financial ltd., Trinidad as of January 2003.

C L Financial has over 50 subsidiary companies in the Caribbean and USA with its most famous product being Angostura Bitters. Burn Stewart’s turnover of £40m a year will be added to Angostura’s £150m and create a business employing 1000 people. C L Financial’s turnover last year was £660m.

The new drinks company will be headquartered at Burn Stewart’s East Kilbride offices and plans to become a global factor in the industry with Burn Stewart’s main markets in Europe, South Africa and the Far East complementing the Caribbean and North American interests of Angostura.

Tobermory Distillery will not be affected by the takeover in the short - term as it is to work at almost 100% capacity in 2003, with great demand for the Distillery’s peated Ledaig and unpeated Tobermory whiskies from both blenders and single malt devotees.

Although sad to see another scotch whisky firm leave Scottish ownership the potential benefits to employees and company sites in the future are vast. Our hope in Tobermory Distillery is that we can use Angostura’s strength in many markets untapped by Burn Stewart to further promote the Distillery and increase sales of our malts.

Alan McConnochie, Distillery Manager.
