Bob
Leitch, Director of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, and his wife Maureen,
were guests of honour at Mull and Iona Chamber of Commerce annual dinner,
which was held at Highland Cottage in Tobermory on 28th March. Sandy
Brunton, President of Mull and Iona Chamber said, “ We were very pleased
to welcome Bob and Maureen to Tobermory, and especially to hear Bob
speaking of his earlier years spent in Tobermory as a young banking
trainee.” Mr Leitch went on
to explain how pleased he was to see a strong Chamber on Mull and Iona and
how important the Chamber movement is within business and Government in
Scotland. Chamber
membership includes 65% of the working population of Scotland and is the
biggest business organisation in the world today, and is in regular
contact with Government, bringing relevant issues to their attention. Mr
Leitch said “The road link north of Salen is obviously most important
not just for Mull….but badly needed to develop the economy of the whole
area. I congratulate you on your efforts to secure funding…… I will
write to the appropriate Minister lending my support”.
He also said “…it is necessary to have joined up thinking for
the whole transport issue. Why
do we have boats that sail before the train arrives, buses that don’t
meet the trains and trains that are timed to miss every connection” Members
of the Chamber came from all areas of Mull and Iona to enjoy the
hospitality of Dave and Jo Curry and their reputation was true to form –
excellent. Members of the board met with Mr Leitch for breakfast the
following morning, and discussed a wide range of issues including
transport, infrastructure, shortage of housing, ferries etc. and then went
on a short tour of some businesses of Tobermory.
Mr Leitch thanked the Chamber “for the wonderful hospitality…
the company, the food and the atmosphere were all excellent.
Can I say how much I appreciated the opportunity to learn about the
issues that affect your local business area.” The
Chamber works hard at trying to raise the profile of the issues that
affects us all in business on the islands.
We would welcome new members with the energy to dedicate a little
time making Mull a better environment for business to survive.
