MULL & IONA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Minutes of the meeting held on 4th July 2005 in Sandy’s Car, down by the pier, outside Craignure Hall

PRESENT:

Sandy Brunton, Georgia O’Neill, Michael Ackerley, Chris Reade

APOLOGIES:

Olive Brown, Jo Currie, Derek Crook, Tom Bettley, John Cable

MINUTES:

It was recognised that the meeting was not quorate so the minutes from meeting 6th June were agreed to be accurate, but were not voted on.

MATTERS ARISING:

Georgia has still to email details of Capability Scotland and LearnDirect to members.

Sandy and Chris Reade both attended local plan meeting.

ROADS:

The Dervaig-Tobermory road has been resurfaced but only with liquid tar and chippings.  It was discussed whether this technique of surfacing was equally as bad for damaging cars as an unmaintained road with pot holes.  It was agreed that it was certainly bad publicity for the island as it occurred at the height of the season and on a particularly hot day.  <Georgia> will compose a letter.

The Community Council sub-committee that was formed to spearhead the road problem has christened its campaign ‘Keep Mull Moving’.  Georgia suggested surveying visitors who were leaving the island as they waited in the ferry queue to ask for their opinion about the quality of Mull roads.

<Sandy> will ask Community Council for a lobby list and a sample letter for people to send.  The Chamber will send letters about weight restrictions and road quality.  <Sandy>  will email MP about the road at Eas Fors.

MEMBERSHIP:

Renewals have been sent out.    <Georgia>  will send letterhead used for renewal letter to Sandy for general use.

TOURISM:

No report in John’s absence.

PRESIDENT:

The Swimming Pool Appeal committee have asked whether the Chamber could promote the ‘Corporate Wall’ where businesses would be acknowledged for donating to the fund.  <Georgia> will include in Chamber News.

There have been a number of incidents on the island of phone companies switching customers’ phone supplies without permission.  Derek has previously contacted Georgia with details of this problem as well as a new scam regarding prerecorded phonecalls that may cost £20 per minute if a person responds to the call.

WEBSITE:

Reciprocal links requested from Ruralgateway and link2exports.co.uk

Georgia asked if a new website that she was creating for the Local Food Forum (run by the Community Trust) could be hosted on the Chamber’s site.  There were no objections to this as MICT is a member of the Chamber.

TREASURER:

No report in Tom’s absence.

DATE OF NEXT MEETING: 1st August 2005
